Some Popular Cell Phone Scams

By: Darren Williger

Cell phones have reduced the burdens of life in so many ways. Your phone now moves along with you and you don’t have to wait at home for a phone call. You can easily stay in touch with anybody anywhere around the world. Other than the use of calls to communicate, we can also use other means of communication such as text messages. You can also surf the web and download material as well. With all these things however, we are left susceptible to scams, these scams are not only inconvenient for us; they may also prove expensive as well.

We get a lot of adverts telling us about free ring tones, jokes as well as music downloads but we usually should be much more careful and avoid anything that sounds too good to be true. You should always read the small print when you want to accept such offers. For teens and children, such offers are presented in a very innocuous manner and it seems quite appealing. Some of these offers come with terms and conditions and hefty recurring fees most of the time. Sometimes these offers come as text messages and once you reply, your free offer turns into something else which depletes your bank account or credit card.

You should also look out for spammers on your cell phone, these people have found out about the world of text messaging as well. Spam with e-mail is one thing, telemarketing is another but this text message version of spam takes the cake as it’s usually the recipients who end up paying for the service.

One common spam scam is the “Pump and Dump”. Thousands of cell phone users have been hit with spam text messages hawking stock (often penny stock). They promote the stock to pump up the price and then dump it as soon as the victims have helped to boost the price and quickly sell before the stock inevitably plummets. People are making millions of dollars with this type of scam.

Identity thieves have also started targeting wireless devices. We tend to use our phones for much more than just talk; certain people conduct online transactions and banking affairs with wireless devices. By doing this, they also risk exposure to having their information stolen by hackers. Wireless technology allows people to use cell phones in similar ways to the means they use their PC’s. Scammers can then hack these phones and get personal information like they do with personal computers. Some are able to hack into cell phones by simply walking past it which allows them to listen in on calls and steal personal information.

What this means for the millions of cell phones users in existence is that extra care should be taken in protecting personal information. Bills should be checked on a monthly basis and avoid saving any personal details on your cell phone.

You should take care of your cell phone the way that you take care of your wallet or your purse, you should know where you are when you are making calls and you should think twice as well before you lend out your cell phone.
